The best way to increase the frequency response of your system when using bookshelf speakers is to add a subwoofer. We suggest that you place the subwoofer in line with the main speakers. However, unlike the main speakers, the subwoofer can be located near a wall or in a corner in order to enhance the low frequency output.

You can connect your speakers in two ways:
The best way is to connect the PRE-OUT outputs of your amplifier to the low-pass inputs of the subwoofer. If this is not possible, then you can connect the speaker outputs of your amplifier to the HIGH-LEVEL inputs of the subwoofer, using speaker cable of at least 1.5 mm diameter. Make sure you respect the polarity of each channel by connecting the positive (+) terminal of the amplifier to the positive (+) terminal of the loudspeaker and the negative (-) terminal of the amplifier to the negative (-) terminal of the loudspeaker (Fig. D).

Most subwoofers have three main controls:
1. Phase. Some models have a two-position switch (0°/180°) and on others, you can adjust the phase continuously from 0° to 180°. Select the position which gives the most powerful low frequencies.
2. Crossover frequency. This adjusts the balance at the crossover point between the low frequencies from the subwoofer and the higher frequencies continuing to the main stereo speakers. The crossover frequency usually varies from 40 to 120 Hz and depends on the speakers being used with the subwoofer: 40 to 80 Hz with large speakers and 80 to 120 Hz with smaller speakers.
3. Sub level volume. This adjusts the volume level output of the subwoofer, allowing you to balance the volume of the subwoofer to blend in with the main stereo speakers. Never set the volume of your subwoofer at more than two-thirds of the maximum.
